Even if they don't pay a lot of mind to OS X as a favored OS to support, they're not gonna staff a development team that doesn't think to test the software on betas of the next major OS release for a major system vendor. Microsoft's public/consumer facing software arm has two major money makers. At the very least, they weren't all on Microsoft's end. El Capitan also completely broke the OneDrive for Business sync client. If the bug is being fixed by an OS update, I think it's a fairly safe conclusion that the show stoppers likely weren't on Microsoft's end.
That said, I don't know what the strategy is going forward, while finally using modern code the suite is still 32-bit and absolutely unwieldy in install and update size. As it stands, the whole suite still crashes, though things have progressed by leaps and bounds since the laughable instability of the early Office 2016 betas. Office 2011 users were also experiencing issues with crashing and with a non-functional Outlook app, but Microsoft was able to fix those bugs with an Office 2011 update that was released on October 7.Īre you implying my expectations are fantasy? As an Office 365 subscriber I expect better from Microsoft - I expect a working product. The update also includes dozens of new emoji from Unicode 7 and 8, including taco, burrito, cheese wedge, unicorn head, middle finger, popcorn, and more. The upcoming OS X 10.11.1 release will also fix several issues with Mail regarding missing server information and a bug that prevents the display of messages and mailboxes within the app. At that time, Microsoft said it was working with Apple to "ensure resolution with the next update of OS X 10.11 El Capitan."Īpple's most recent OS X 10.11.1 beta for developers and public beta testers was released Wednesday afternoon, with Apple asking developers to focus on Mail and Office 2016. Microsoft did update Office 2016 earlier this week, adding new features and security enhancements, but admitted it did not fix any El Capitan bugs in an accompanying support document. Microsoft informed customers it was aware of the problem nearly two weeks ago and said it was "actively working with Apple" on a fix, hinting the problem was on Apple's end and wasn't something Microsoft could fix alone. Since OS X El Capitan was released in late September, some Office 2016 users have found the software to be nearly unusable due to frequent crashes or an inability to open the Office apps at all.
If you have run across this issue, make sure to let Microsoft know in its Answer forums so that they see how widespread this issue has become but for now, I would not recommend installing Office 2016 on El Capitan. The upcoming OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan release, which is expected to be released in the very near future, will include a compatibility update for Microsoft Office 2016 to fix ongoing crashing issues, MacRumors has learned. You can download and install Office 2016 for Mac as a one-time purchase, or if you have an Office 365 Home, Office 365 Personal or Office 365 University. Microsoft has released a few updates, at least for Outlook, that they said would address this issue but so far, nothing has stabilized the apps.
Further, I have yet to find a work-around to prevent these crashes it does appear to be most prevalent after resuming from sleep.
Some users have reported no issues post upgrade but for those that hit this bug, it’s a show-stopper. For those who use a Mac every day with Office, you may want to wait on upgrading to El Capitan as the problem appears to be more widespread than Microsoft is admitting. When trying to write this post using Office 2016 on El Capitan, Word crashed twice. The crashing is so bad that I cannot trust the apps to work long enough to accomplish anything meaningful which renders my Mac useless for daily tasks. To top it off, I have had the error reporting mechanism crash (above image) while trying to send my crash log after Outlook bit the dust. Office 2016 on El Capitan is unstable and virtually impossible to use on my machine all of the apps crash multiple times a day. I am not alone in this either, there is a lengthy thread in Microsoft’s Answer forums that is filled with other users who have the same issue and users on Twitter are quite vocal about problem as well. I have been running the GM candidates and the release build of El Capitan since it was first announced by Apple as well as running the release version of Office 2016 for Mac and the experience is atrocious. Today is the day that Apple is releasing El Capitan for users around the globe and if you are thinking about running the latest version of Office 2016 with this new OS, you need to be aware of performance issues.
